Welcome to the Southern Living Showcase Home video tour as we share the unique design concepts and decorator
touches that take full advantage of the sweeping 180 degree views overlooking Weiss Lake. Each video
focuses on a different aspect of the design of this mountain home.
The best place to start your tour of the Showcase Home is a discussion about the basic architectural
design concepts. The primary goals of this home were to maximize the benefits of the incredible views while
incorporating energy efficiency.
Next stop in the tour is to hear some of the builder's perspectives of how he so successfully merged the desires
of the homeowners with the practical aspects of the building lot and the choice of construction materials to
maximize energy efficiency and year round comfort. Wade Chappell of Chappell Construction describes some of what is
involved in moving from vision to reality in the building of this home.
Next, the builder shares a few more details about the selection of building materials and systems and points out
how they were incorporated into the design of the home.
Now that you have a feel for the design concepts behind this Southern Living Showcase Home, let's meet the
interior decorator who's challenge it was to take advantage of the outstanding lake and mountain views from every
room in the house. Avis Everett, a North Georgia decorator, was tasked with capturing an easy living country feel
in an modern, efficient home design.
Starting with the tour of the Living and Dining area, the decorator explains the choice of colors and materials
to accent this important part of the main living area. The furniture, accents and colors were all selected for day
to day comfort and to compliment the greens, browns and blues that are so obvious as you look out the many
windows and doors at the lake and mountain views.
Next we will visit the all important Scullery Kitchen, which you will immediately notice is not your ordinary
kitchen. Patterned after a sleek, high tech galley kitchen, the food prepration area extends into the living and
dining space with a large wet island. Notice the repeated use of trouble-free stainless steel through out the
scullery and the food preparation area.
Now we will head upstairs in the main building to the Master Bedroom, huge walkin closet and laundry. Again the
decorator has incorporated blues into the design to compliment an even better view of the lake down below. One of
the real highlights of the master bedroom is the open air sleeping porch which offers unlimited views of the lake
as well as almost constant year round breezes up from the lake.
One of the most interesting aspects of this Southern Living Showcase Home is that the majority of the sleeping
accomodations are in a separate building adjoining the main home. This area is called the Bunk house and was
ingeniously designed to accomodate a large family of kids and grandkids on their frequent visits, yet allow the
owners to "shut down" the bunk house when the guests go home. The result is privacy and comfort for the guests
combined with outstanding energy efficiency when the guests are gone.
There is one other surprise at Wood Bluff. The owner has included a separate complimentary community cottage
near the main residence. While keeping with the lake cottage theme, the Cottage serves as a gathering point for the
residents of The Bluffs of Weiss and as a community meeting facility for local and regional clubs, civic
organizations and smaller corporate retreats.
Finally we take a short tour of some of the amenities of The Bluffs of Weiss, the home of the Southern Living
Showcase Home. From hiking trails to fishing ponds to Weiss Lake watersports to the large community garden, there
is no shortage of activities for an active lifestyle on this mountain surrounded by a lake.
